As an aside, notice the beautiful “Benedictine arrangement” of the crucifix and candles on the main altar, ensuring that, while the Mass is versus populum, the attention is on the Eucharist and the crucifix, not the priest or, in this particular case, the Pope. Pope Benedict XVI wrote eloquently about this topic. In cases where the priest cannot celebrate Mass ad orientem (as has been done for two-thousand or so years in the East and West) the “Benedictine arrangement” ensures in the very least the existence of a “liturgical east”.
