Lately I’ve been enjoying Greek and Russian Orthodox sacred music, and it has undoubteldy been a much-needed source of beauty for me in the midst of this contemporary liturgical desert. When it comes to church music, many of our local parishes today have become so emersed by the saccharine melodies of Peter, Paul and Mary, that our own Western sacred liturgical music (Gregorian chant, Palestrina, etc.) has become foreign to our ears. I’ve always said that we in the West can learn a lot from the East about the importance of preserving our liturgical traditions, and it certainly seems evident why when listening to this ancient chant.

Chanted by Byzantine Master and Professor of Byzantine Music Mr. George Papanikolaos from Samos, Greece.
