Our deepest hungers are not for food and drink, not for amusements and recreations, not for property and wardrobes, not for notoriety and gossip. We hunger for truth, we thirst to drink beauty, we yearn to celebrate, we stretch out to love and be loved. This is why anything less than everything is not enough.

—Fr. Thomas Dubay, from his book “Happy Are You Poor”

In the season of Spring, our senses are assaulted with God’s bounty of emerging greens, bright yellows and pinks, blues and reds abound as the ground warms and blooms abundantly literally “renewing the face of the earth.” As we drink in this beauty that God creates time and time again, we are filled and satiated. But it doesn’t last forever. Alas, the light wanes and the air chills bringing the muted colors of Autumn. As this quiet color fades into a drab and lifeless gray, and the winds intensify as the earth turns inward towards Winter, we are witness to the shortening of the light, and an ever darkening sagacity of time. We thirst anew.

Do not despair, for this prepares us for the whispers of the heart that God will offer us if we but sit and listen in the cold and dark hours. Where will we find the Truth our soul demands, and the Beauty our thirst craves in the shortened light and ever elusive time? Where else but in the soft glow of an illumined Sanctuary will you find true Light, Truth, and Beauty. In this time of approaching Advent, seek out the restful place of a properly set sanctuary that places Light at its center, and that which heightens the senses with the perfume of ancient resins burned into incense. May you find comfort and be brought into the celebration of Christ’s birth as you sit in Adoration. In this season of Advent, where “we stretch out to love and be loved,” this is “everything,” and one cannot have enough.
