A Look Back

This stunning photo, from a 1955 postcard, shows the interior of Saint Michael Parish (1892) in Milwaukee. I’m grateful someone sent it my way so I could share it with Cream City Catholic readers.

The beautiful reredos, as well as the high and side altars, remain to this day (as you can see in our gallery of the parish). Unfortunately, the elegant altar rail was removed. It can be found today in the back of the church. (In other words, at least it was not destroyed.) Carpeting covers the wood floor, and white paint coats the interior, concealing the lovely details seen here. It’s hard to believe that such exquisite craftsmanship would be removed or concealed. What’s the point? It was the ’60s after all. Hopefully, an extensive restoration project will bring this Milwaukee gothic gem back to its original splendor.
