I recently ducked into Buckley’s, located on Cass Street, just a short walk from the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist and Lake Michigan. It’s an intimate, classy setting that boasts an impressive bar (the perfect destination for your next afterwork Happy Hour). For lunch on a sublime Fall afternoon, I tried the Bahn Mi, a Vietnamese style shaved barbecue pork sandwich. Be warned, the sambal sauce carried a bite, but it wasn’t overpowering and faded quickly. If you can stand the heat and want something different, try it and you won’t regret it. The waiter described the Bahn Mi as his favorite sandwich on the menu and I will definitely order it again on my return. If you’re feeling less adventurous and looking for something more familiar, the burgers (grass fed) are also excellent.

As I experienced culinary perfection and sipped my coffee, a smooth reggae beat blended with the gentle breeze coming through the front door, providing a soothing, Caribbean backdrop to this autumn lunch in Milwaukee. Warm sunlight poured through the large arched windows and I asked myself, could it get any better? After a very busy work week, this was just what I needed. Once you wrap up your meal, step outside into this fashionable neighborhood and go for a leisurely stroll like I did…that is, while this beautiful weather lasts!

Check out the charming atmosphere and excellent food at Buckley’s, my friends. Order yourself a drink, pull up a barstool and enjoy a well-deserved break!

Simple, grass-fed burger with thick cut bacon and red onion jam. It’s excellent.
