Cantina Zaccoagnini

Here at Cream City Catholic, wine is our constant companion when discussing the serious – and not so serious – goings on in the Church. We thought it would be a good idea to start a monthly wine review as we always try to keep it diverse, with a different variety each meeting.

To kick us off we have Cantina Zaccagnini (2011) which is from Montepulciano in central Italy. It is a deep red which would probably be paired with red meat or heavier food. The nose is fruity with prominent plum and the taste matches the nose less the sweetness. It isn’t as dry as the driest of reds which makes it easier to have with a group of diverse guests. It is smooth, slightly smokey, and not overwhelmingly tannic.

I suppose any good wine review comes with some sort of a rating so let’s set that up now for this and future reviews:

Taste

1. Crowd Pleaser – A wine that you can serve the Riesling lovers and the Cabernet Savignon lovers alike.
2. Rich Red – A wine sure to delight the hardcore red wine lovers.
3. Juicy – A wine for the sweet-tooths.

Cost (we usually stick to the $20 or less range)

1. Over $20
2. $10-$20
3. Less than $10

Overall Quality

1. Exquisite
2. Good
3. Fair
4. Toxic

Ok! So for the Cantina Zaccagnini we have Taste: 1, Cost: 2 and Overall Quality: 2. Not bad. I would definitely buy it again for an evening with guests where I wasn’t quite sure of everyone’s taste profile.

Cheers!

Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,
There’s always laughter and good red wine.
At least I’ve always found it so.
